On March 21, 1966, Sainik School Ghorakhal, which is close to Nainital, was founded on the majestic Rampur Nawab estate. The name "Ghorakhal" refers to the events in 1857 when a British General wandered into this area in an effort to flee the Awadh rebels. His horse died while drinking water from a nearby pond, thus the name "Ghora (Horse) Khal (pond)". The British Rulers gave General Wheeler the Ghorakhal estate in 1870. This Estate was bought in 1921 by the then-Nawab of Rampur, Maj Gen, Alijah, Amirul Umrah, Nawab, Sir Syed Mohammed Hamid Ali, Khan Bahadur. The State Government (then Uttar Pradesh) bought the Estate from the Nawab of Rampur after the privy purses were abolished in post-Independent India and established the sainik school of ghorakhal.
